Champion 305 Paper Cutters
The Champion 305 design was introduced to the graphic-arts industry
in 1962. While it has been continually updated as new technology was
developed, the structural heart of the Champion 305 has remained constant.
The cast iron base, arch, and table, centrally joined, is a design that
has withstood the test of time. In 1968, the Champion 305 MCM was introduced
to the industry as our first spacer cutter. The biggest tribute to the
Champion 305 can be found in the used market. Older models that have
been a workhorse for their original owner are often sold years later
for about what the original owner paid for it when it was brand new.
Now that's value!
Backguage Positioning Accuracy
Only Challenge and Polar take the more-costly extra step to isolate
the accuracy of the position of the backguage from the inaccuracy of
the lead screw specifications or wear. The industry standard has always
been to measure the position of the backguage using a multiplier of
the number of revolutions of the lead screw. While this system is acceptable
on small cutters that aren't worked very hard, today's hard-working
binderies require a system that will not change over time as the lead
screw wears. All Challenge Champion programmable cutters measure the
position of the backguage utilizing an encoder traveling in a hardened,
precision fine-toothed gear track mounted under the table and parallel
to the lead screw. This system will not be affected by uneven lead screw
wear caused by years of cutting. The more that is expected of the cutter
year after year, the more important this becomes to the customer.
The programming process
The operator now has two screens with which to interact, and a reduced
number of keys to learn. This is a system that has been designed by
Challenge and is not an add-on system from another manufacturer. Challenge
has written the entire program and designed all of the electronics.
Safety
The Champion 305 has two microprocessors that communicate back and forth
when the cut buttons are activated simultaneously. Any abnormal interruption
will cause the knife and clamp to be immediately returned to the up
position.
New features introduced at PRINT '97
- Increased the clamp opening from 3-1/2" to 4".
- Increased the length of the table in front of the knife from 18-1/2"
to 25".
- Increased the capacity of the hydraulic tank from five gallons
to thirteen.
- Incorporated a cooling fan directly onto the hydraulic tank to
keep the fluid temperature under 140 degrees Fahrenheit to extend
the life of the hydraulic system.
- Shortened the length of the lead screw by removing the handwheel
at the front of the table. This serves to stabilize the lead screw
as the backguage moves back and forth.
- Provided for the same function as the handwheel by innovating
a patent pending variable speed pinpoint backguage control on the
console to allow the operator to quickly find a cut position on
the stock when the dimension is not known.
- The base of the cutter will now accommodate the use of a fork
truck, pallet jack, or Johnson bar to aid in moving and leveling
the cutter.
- The footprint of the base is now larger to further disperse the
weight of the cutter per square inch of contact with the floor.
- The design changes of the arch, table, and base increased the
net weight of the cutter from 2,080 pounds to 2,550 pounds.
- The rear table and arch are now fully enclosed leaving no openings
to be pinch points.
- The backguage now moves even faster from point to point to increase
cutting efficiency and reduce the time it takes to complete each
job.
- New dual screen technology makes the programming and operation
of the Champion 305 XG even easier than our previous model, the
user-friendly 305 CRT.
- The number of cut positions for the 99 program channels has been
increased from 4,000 to 9,801.
- The computer now has non-volatile memory which has eliminated
the need for a back-up battery.
- A new light touch, color coded, alpha/numeric key pad has replaced
the previous black keys.
- Electronically controlled clamp pressure, patent pending, allows
the operator to adjust the clamping force from the computer key
pad.
- Programmable clamp pressure, patent pending, allows the operator
to tailor the clamping force to the needs of each job and/or cut
position.
- Multi-lingual programming allows the operator to choose which
of the following languages the prompts will appear in: English,
Spanish, French, German, or Portuguese.
- Variable mode data entry allows the operator to input data as
decimal inches to 0.001, fractional inches to 1/64th, or metric
to 0.1 millimeters. With the touch of a button, the computer will
convert the inputted data to any of the other modes immediately.
- And the same Challenge reliability, productivity, value, and
two year top to bottom warranty!
